OpenText Empowers SMS group Engineers to Accomplish Complex and Demanding Design Tasks from Anywhere

OpenText Exceed TurboX Replaced Expensive Personal Computing Hardware with Flexible and Fast 'Anytime, Anywhere' Access to Design Environments

Waterloo, ON – 2018-12-11 – OpenText™ (NASDAQ: OTEX, TSX: OTEX), a global leader in Enterprise Information Management (EIM), today announced that SMS group, a plant supplier to the metallurgical industry, is using OpenText Exceed TurboX to help its engineers deliver their best work in a more flexible, cost-effective environment.

SMS group is a plant supplier to the metallurgical industry for steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals. It offers design, engineering, and manufacturing services, including designing new industrial plants, modernization and digitalization initiatives, and life cycle services. It has 13,500 employees around the globe, many of whom are engineers involved in complex design tasks that are graphically and computationally demanding. SMS engineers perform numerous complex calculations and simulations when designing and constructing plants for its clients, using MSC Marc and Mentat software. OpenText Exceed TurboX gives these engineers a powerful and reliable remote access platform through which to work, which has helped to reduce costs and increase flexibility.

"We previously used expensive and noisy personal workstations for our engineers," said Dr.-Ing Christian Imiela, Manager, Calculations & Structure Analysis team at SMS group. "We wanted something reliable that would fulfil those requirements, but in a way that was globally accessible, and effective even with a low bandwidth. Exceed TurboX let us do that – it's as good as having a personal workstation, and also gave our teams the flexibility of working with laptops. Using OpenText Exceed TurboX, we can share results with our customers in real time and any changes that are made or work-in-progress can be suspended for later resumption."

SMS group uses one data center for each region, and users connect through Exceed TurboX to work on their projects. Exceed TurboX offers excellent 3D OpenGL performance, giving the engineers the required performance to develop their finite element models, with a fast and reliable connection even over a low bandwidth. It also provides 'suspend and resume' capabilities, meaning that work is never lost.

"We've been using the technology for 12 years now," said Imiela. "My colleagues are very happy with the performance. Exceed TurboX provides us with a cost saving and reliable solution – it simply works."
